Earpiece
Question
Opinion
Current department radio models: Motorola APX 7000 or APX 8000 (as of 05 November 2023)
Pros & Cons
Pro
- Private audio reception
- Better sound quality
- Improved audio reception in loud environments
Con
-
- Durability issue, long cables
- Safety issue if mic is damaged
- Device will have to be removed in order for the radio to operate properly
- Have to retrain yourself on where your mic button is located. In a high stress event, you'll revert to where your mic button “was” located.
My opinion on a better setup
- Motorola Remote Speaker Microphone and listen-only earpiece combination
- Motorola PMMN4062 IMPRES Remote Speaker Microphone, this model has a built-in 3.5mm ear jack
- Can be purchased online, search the model #
- Listen-only earpiece with 3.5mm plug
- Replace silicon earbud with the earmold and/or torpedo earbud
- Replace the silicon earbud with an earmold. The default silicon earbud blocks out ambient noise which is an officer safety issue. The earmold will allow allows ambient noise for situational awareness.
- Why is this better?
- You'll still be running a “long-stem” setup (using a remote speaker/mic), but with an added benefit of an earpiece for privacy. If the earpiece gets damaged, it can be easily removed. Most importantly, you can still transmit.
